Digital ID vs Democracy

Quick update, hot topic, final straw? Moment the scales fell from your eyes?

The online safety bill is allegedly to protect children online, but Tommy Robinson has been shouting about organised child rape gangs in our cities for a very long time, and has been imprisoned for it. Therefore 1) can you really be that concerned & 2) it’s strange that the uses appear to be to predominately silence free speech.

OK, so if the Brexit referendum wasn’t enough, we have a government openly flaunting the will of the people. Past & present: Immigration, digital ID – both topics the people made clear about since Blair’s days. They. Just. Don’t. Listen.

Gov response “We will introduce a digital ID within this Parliament to help tackle illegal migration, make accessing government services easier, and enable wider efficiencies. We will consult on details soon.” Signatories at time of writing? 2,862,456 Link for latest number? HERE

If we all have digital ID, how hard would it be to vibe-code an app that sucks in all the current bills going through parliament and allows the ID’s citizens to vote for or against. In such a world the antiquainted need for a member of parliament to travel from cornwall by horse and cart to westminster to supposedly represent their constituents becomes redundant…..

Apart from them being unable to do a single thing right + their pot of money that they piss away everwhere and everytime is dwindling to the point no-one will lend to them anymore

I know what project I will be focussing on. And if you think Elon musk wouldn’t like to trial a digital direct democracy app in the UK before implementing it worldwide ? ………….

The mood of a united nation is “bring it on”

We can certainly make it easy to write to your MP with a dropdown of templates that you send (IT canchange the sent from info anyway) from your email account (not a unite-the-nation account). Here’s a little of what we’ve looked into so far (awaiting more IT volunteers !!! )

Yes — there are a few WordPress plugins (or tools) out there that let UK users enter their postcode and then show their MP / constituency or MP profile. Here are some you can try, plus tips and caveats:

✅ Existing Plugins / Tools

Plugin / ToolWhat it doesNotes / caveats
Find your MPEnables retrieval of a UK MP based on postcode. Use shortcode [find-your-mp] in a post. (WordPress.com)Quite old (last update 2010), may have compatibility or maintenance issues.
British Member of Parliament ProfileQuery Parliament’s database and return an MP profile via shortcode. Accepts constituency name or postcode. (discover.commoninja.com)Uses Postcodes.io to map postcode → constituency. (discover.commoninja.com)
WriteToThem integration / pluginmySociety’s WriteToThem service offers a form where users input postcode and send message to MP. There is a WordPress plugin that embeds this form as a widget. (writetothem.com)Since it delegates the matching and sending logic to mySociety, you offload a lot of complexity.
(Related) Postcodes4U Address FinderAdds UK postcode → address lookups, mostly for address entry (e.g. forms) (WordPress.org English (New Zealand))Doesn’t directly map to MP/constituency, but useful to validate the postcode side of things.

⚠️ Considerations & risks

  • Data & APIs: To map postcode → constituency → MP, you’ll need a reliable data source or API. Some plugins depend on Postcodes.io, TheyWorkForYou API, or Parliament / open data sources. If those change or require API keys, plugins may break.
  • Maintenance & compatibility: Some plugins (like “Find your MP”) are quite old and haven’t been updated in years. They may not work with recent WP versions.
  • Caching & performance: Looking up MP info in real time can be slow if not cached. You may need to store results locally or use transient caching.
  • Legal / licensing: Use data in compliance with licences (Open Parliament, ONS, etc.).
  • Fallback behavior: Some postcodes may not map cleanly (e.g. new areas, edge cases), so always handle “not found” gracefully.

If you like, I can find a currently maintained plugin (tested recently) that fits your WordPress version and UK use case, and send you download/install links. Do you want me to send those?
